The project is entitled WALLPAIN7《遊七圖牆》. It is a research-based installation work which is site-specific (on the wall). The final product is a set of 7 wallpapers which is installed on the wall for display.
The purpose of this project is to let people rethink about the existence of numbers in our life in a mild way. By using graphical visualization, new icons have been created and duplicated to form patterns like those on wallpapers. Experience tells us that details on a wallpaper usually leave nothing but a vague impression on the people who saw it. What exactly the components of the patterns are is rarely known. In fact, numbers resemble wallpaper in some ways. Therefore, I have used graphics associated with the number 7 as basic components of the patterns on the wall. By doing so, I aim to raise the awareness of the existence of numbers, especially number 7. Numbers are everywhere, yet people seldom realize how they exist and how they work.
Each wallpaper of WALLPAIN7 stands for an event which is related to the number 7. For example, the annual event “Hong Kong 1 July March” (香港七一遊行) has been a large-scale demonstration in Hong Kong since 2003. It is held on the1st of July every year. I have chosen 7 pictures which are related to the event for generating the graphics. The graphics were generated by a programme written by me using Processing. In fact, the number 7 has been intentionally involved in the coding of the programme as well. For example, the dimensions of the picture are (700x700px), the framerate is a multiple of 7, the number of pictures used is 7, etc. Also, every single generated graphic consists of 7 real pictures. I duplicated those graphics in order to make a pattern as a wallpaper by using Photoshop. Besides putting on wall for display, the project is on-going on the web. A website of WALLPAIN7 has been built and it will be updated every now and then. For more information, please refer to the blog of WALLPAIN7: http://seven7neves.wordpress.com
